Harder+Company Community Research seeks a Controller to join our team of 35 researchers and corporate staff committed to advancing equity and provide community-based, action-oriented evaluation and capacity-building to a broad range of social sector organizations.

The Role

The Controller position is responsible and accountable for the overall accounting operations of the company and management of the Finance/Accounting team. This individual must possess great communication skills, attention to detail, meticulous organization skills, strong financial acumen, and a high aptitude for technology and financial systems. The ideal candidate will be strategic yet hands-on, having experience in a similar role in professional services and/or consulting organizations. The Controller should be an inspiring and credible leader that is committed to advancing our organizational culture and demonstrates reliable competence across all accounting functions, serving as a mentor and leader for the Finance/Accounting team. This position will report directly to the company owners (Partners). Examples of specific tasks include:

Management, Operations and Planning
  • Oversee operations of the finance and accounting department, composed of one project accountant and one project accountant/payroll manager.
  • Develop and oversee a documented system of accounting policies and procedures. Cultivate continuous improvement of Accounting and Financial Processes and the development of the team with the goal to achieve best practices and optimal output.
  • Develop, promote, sustain and nurture close working relationships with all company staff and Partners, make financial recommendations to Partners; and devise and implement solutions to operational challenges as appropriate
  • Maintain current knowledge of finance and accounting best practices while implementing operational improvements to enhance efficiency and compliance. Assist in formulating the company’s future direction and participate in key decisions pertaining to strategic initiatives and operational execution.
  • Develop financial and tax strategies.
  • Manage in and out-of-state business licenses and tax payments

Transactions
  • Prepare monthly bank reconciliations, accounting schedules and journal entries, in order to produce timely accrual- and cash-based financial statements
  • Oversee accounts receivable, accounts payable, general ledger, and payroll functions of the company
  • Manage the payroll function ensuring efficient systems, process and controls
  • Oversee bank transfers and initiate ACH payments, wire transfers, and check processing
  • Ensure that reconciliations of bank statements, expense reports, and credit card are completed
  • Maintain the chart of accounts
  • Maintain a system of controls over accounting transactions

Reporting
  • Issue timely and complete financial statements, on both an accrual- and cash-basis
  • Calculate and issue financial and operating metrics
  • Manage the production of the annual budget and forecasts
  • Develop and produce regular reporting and analysis, including key metrics reports, and conduct ad hoc financial analysis at request of company Owners
  • Calculate variances from the budget and report significant issues to management
  • Monitor cash balances and cash forecasts
  • Comply with local, state and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings

Compliance and Risk Management
  • Manage the company’s Risk Management programs. Manage the annual business insurance renewal process to ensure appropriate coverage
  • Coordinate the provision of information to external auditors for the annual audit
  • Understand and mitigate key elements of company’s risk profile
  • Stay current with compliance and risk management best practices while monitoring fiscal control systems to ensure ongoing adherence to regulations
  • Ensure that record keeping meets the requirements of auditors and regulatory requirements
  • Report risk issues to Partners
  • Maintain relations with external auditors and investigate their findings and recommendations
Leadership
  • Effectively collaborate with Operations and Human Resources staff to ensure communication and coordination across departments
  • Develop Finance and Accounting team goals that are fully aligned with the company strategy and goals
  • Lead and coach the finance team  
  • Provide coaching, guidance and support, set professional development plans to assist employees to reach their full potential through the Performance Management process
  • Ensure the team delivers the highest standard of teamwork and customer service
  • Ensure optimal deployment of resources to achieve business goals
Who We Are Seeking

General Management Experience: You have prior successful experience working in a remote office setting under limited direct supervision, leading a variety of financial reporting and accounting operations, payroll, invoicing, and cash management support. You are highly detail-oriented, accurate and organized and have excellent critical and analytical thinking, and problem-solving skills. You are able to develop positive and professional interactions with clients and peers.

Broad Experience with Office Technology and Software: You have proficiency and experience working with Deltek Vision or a similar accounting and finance software. Experience with ADP or a similar payroll software is also required. You have demonstrated proficiency with standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers etc. You are proficient in Microsoft Office 365 (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint), DocuSign, and Adobe Acrobat and learn new programs quickly. You have experience working with online business banking portals.

You enjoy working in a fast-paced environment, contributing to project goals and outcomes, and can pivot across projects and tasks while communicating to multiple teams in a timely fashion. You have the ability to anticipate challenges and identify appropriate solutions.

People Leadership: You are able to lead a team of people to success in their roles, contributing to the larger team and organization’s shared successes. You demonstrate a genuine interest in developing team culture and promoting professional development of each team member. You are excited and able to translate complex financial concepts to people with varying levels of expertise in accounting.

Education + Experience: You have seven to ten years of relevant financial and/or accounting management experience, preferably within a professional services organization and a company of similar size to ours, as well as a Master’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field. CPA preferred.

Currently, the majority of our staff is working remotely across the metropolitan areas in which we operate (Sacramento, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego). Given the specific job duties, the Controller will primarily work remotely (i.e., from home), but must live in California, San Diego preferred. Controller may also be asked to come into the San Diego office or other meeting place for in-person work and meetings.   

This position is full time with a salary range of $111,920- $159,887, commensurate with experience, plus a benefits package including medical, dental, vacation, holiday, retirement, professional development and more!
